“I love trying tasty, delicious food when I travel!”
Gyeongsangbuk-do proves that it does have tasty food after all
Yoon Kye-sang selected Mungyeong as his first city to stop in on his Gyeongsangbuk-do art & music indulgence tour for quality play, dining, and relaxing. After trying zip lining and bicycle riding along the railroad, Yoon Kye-sang became hungry. He began to think about what he would eat.

In Korea the food of Gyeongsangbuk-do is relatively unknown compared to other regions. Gyeongsangbuk-do mostly follows the very distinctive characteristics of the region, with a very well maintained traditional cuisine uninfluenced by other cultures because the area remained relatively isolated longer than other parts of Korea thanks to its forbidding geological features, like a rugged mountain terrain.

Knowing this, Yoon Kye-sang was very careful in trying to select a restaurant in Mungyeong. He always looks for out of the way restaurants wherever he goes, and so he discovered a must-try restaurant in Mungyeong.

He found the ‘Mungyeong Yakdol Hanu Beef Restaurant’ offering traditional Korean beef that locals say you must try when visiting Mungyeong. Would this place prove that Gyeongsangbuk-do does have tasty food after all?

Mungyeong boneless short ribs put a smile on Yoon Kye-sang’s face.

A table was set at Mungyeong Yakdol Hanu in front of Yoon Kye-sang. He loves beef meat so much that he can name the parts.

“Boneless short ribs, thick skirt, tenderloin…”

Mungyeong Yakdol Cattle feed on Yakdol (Pegmatite, a rock) found in Mungyeong. Mungyeong Yakdol Cattle provide the best quality meat and are raised under a strict, systematic management program as a cooperative venture between Mungyeong city, Mungyeong Livestock Cooperatives, and farms.

Yakdol is a Pegmatite reputed to be a magical stone with a purifying effect turning muddy water clear. Cattle fed on Yakdol provide tender, vitamin B rich meat.

Yoon Kye-sang wondered how anyone thought to feed cattle with stone and was suspicious about how it could actually influence the taste of meat. He placed a portion of boneless short rib on the grill. These ribs have extensive marbling and are rolled up for presentation to resemble flowers. They are Yoon Kye-sang’s favorite.

Yoon Kye-sang is a true meat lover and feels he knows how to grill meat the perfect way. He turns the meat just once, no more or less, right when there is a little bit of blood left on one side. When he picked up his perfectly cooked portion, juice readily dripped from the meat.

Ah… food is tasted with the eyes first. To Yoon Kye-sang it looked perfect. The distinctively aroma of the Hanu beef smelled delicious and perfect. He then popped it into his mouth, and within seconds, a smile spread over his face and he gave two thumbs up.

Silently, he continued to cook the beef on the grill and eat in contemplation. Yoon Kye-sang says that, as a meat lover, he has always ordered quality beef from a specific area in Korea, but that this beef was so good that he wanted to switch to Mungyeong Yakdol Hanu henceforth.

“Il-Du-Baek-Mi” is a Korean expression that means ‘one cow provides a hundred flavors’. It also means that a special recipe is used for each part of the beef in order to bring out each of the hundred flavors. Selecting a place to tour is very similar. In order to bring out the best of a journey, the best place matching the theme and purpose of the trip must be selected.
